I actually wasn't sure if my explanation of keigo and the other stuff made any sense, lol ^^

It did! I did already know a bit about keigo from my (very beginning) Japanese class and Wikipedia, but the explanation worked on its own.

For Gekkamaru, I thought the translation did a good enough job of conveying the formality -- I'm sure there were lots of nuances that were missed, but all the times he explicitly referred to her as his master helped. xD It helps that his voice just sounds very polite and subdued, except when he didn't.

Haha, same here! Have you seen Yuan's picture yet? I mean... I wouldn't mind seeing that happen XD Here's an image of him

I have been looking up every shred of information I can get about the fandisc, from the pictures to translations of the teaser stories someone is doing.

I think I hit my game quota for "smug and amoral murderers" (thank you, Yang) so the picture didn't strike me much! (Also, I was too busy going wide-eyed over Jack. And the religious Disciple guy who is going to be a foil to Orlok). Buuuut I am willing to be convinced by his voice. :P

Also, oh my goodness, he's 40?? That's an interesting choice, I thought he was the same age as Yang. I guess Yang gets to know what it's like to feel young and inexperienced around him.

And I think this makes him such a fascinating character since he's obviously strong enough to kill people. But he consciously chooses not to.

Yes! I think of all the characters in the game (apart from Enju), Goemon is the one I like most as a person.

I think it even further muddles the whole issue of his duty vs. his feelings. It's when his convictions gets tested the hardest, and I loved witnessing that struggle.

Yeah! I also loved how it affected Enju, where she feels responsible and complicit, and of course all the angst. And I love how it plays into Gekkamaru's struggle with his identity.

Honestly, the whole internal conflict he faces just made me love his character so much, and the game does it so well. I'm a big sucker for these characters, lol.

Oh, yes. Just seeing how he was broken in the game, and how raw his feelings were. ;___;

I would highly recommend another otome game, Collar Malice. One of the love interests in it also falls into the bodyguard trope. His route contains the whole issue of duty vs. feelings, and it tackles questions regarding the purpose of life and what it means to live.

:DDD This sounds amazing! Which love interest?

Considering that Orlok is still my favorite, I think it's safe to say that a route with the whole issue of duty vs. feelings, and it tackles questions regarding the purpose of life and what it means to live. is written to appeal to me. :P

Yeah! Hakuouki is my first and top favorite otome game, so I'm definitely going to be writing my thoughts on it =D

:D I would also be very curious about any historical or cultural notes to provide -- I think Hakuouki was the game where I missed them most.
